Vancouver Red Tent Canada Day of Action rally Recap
Yesterday marked the much anticipated Red Tent Canada Day of Action. Rallies took place in a number of cities, including Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, and Victoria. Here in Vancouver, the lunch hour rally was held at Victory Square, on the western fringe of the Downtown Eastside. The event was exciting, well-attended, and generated a lot of interest. The speakers included Darcie Bennett of Pivot Legal Society, Am Johal of the Impact on Community Coalition, Wendy Petersen of the Carnegie Community Action Project, Scott Clark, and David Murray.
As the Red Tent Campaign and other housing advocates look forward, the main practical message that I took away from the event is that pressure needs to be put on the Bloc Québecois to support Bill C-304 and a national housing strategy. Today, Libby Davies’ Bill C-304 will get a third reading in the House of Commons and while the Liberals and NDP support the bill, it will not be enough unless the Bloc puts its weight behind the bill. You can Show your support for a national housing strategy by emailing Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe to let him know that Canadians have waited long enough for a federal commitment on housing, and that by working together we can build a Canada-wide strategy that respects Quebec's interests.
